Concrete block from truck kills woman

2014-11-29 00:00

A WOMAN was killed in a horror Field’s Hill truck smash yesterday, the latest in a string of accidents on the busy arterial route to Durban.

The car the 83-year-old was travelling in was crushed by a precast concrete block, which had been carried as cargo on the truck that overturned.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said the car was crushed beneath the eight-ton concrete block. “Paramedics found the road blocked by a large truck that lay on its side. A light motor vehicle lay crushed beneath the truck and crane attachment. On assessment, paramedics found that an elderly woman lay trapped within her vehicle and sadly she had already succumbed to her injuries,” he said.

The M13 Field’s Hill route restricts access to trucks at times.

Restrictions state trucks with a carrying capacity of 16 tons to 25 tons are forbidden to use the M13 from 6 am to 9 am in the morning on the eastbound carriageway, and from Hillcrest to Pinetown between 4 pm and 6.30 pm in both directions.

Hillcrest ward councillor Rick Crouch said there was not enough enforcement in the area.

“Trucks can dodge police and go around them because they do not station themselves at all of the access points to the road,” he said.

Crouch said that restrictions were not adequate.

“I have asked the MEC to restrict all trucks from using this route; however, he refuses and this death could have been prevented if he ensured this,” he said.

Truck owner Nolan Chetty said the truck was on its way to make a delivery to Pinetown from Pietermaritzburg.

“We aren’t sure why the truck overturned, but the truck had just had its brakes and alignment done last week and is serviced every 10 000 kilometres,” he said.
