Conference on heritage at museum

2011-09-02 00:00

HERITAGE month celebrations, held at Msunduzi/Voortrekker Museum yesterday, kicked off with a conference on preserving heritage in a changing society.

The day long conference touched on the promotion of heritage sites, and the role education and museums play in disseminating and preserving heritage and heritage symbolism.

Provincial heritage agency Amafa’s senior heritage practitioner, Celeste Roussow, talked about plans to achieve multiculturalism and social cohesion within the province.

“We will be focusing on the development of ignored sites as tourism destinations. We also have projects that are awaiting approval from the council, such as the rehabilitation of John Dube’s home.

“We are also providing employment for locals who live around these heritage sites, who look after the sites and maintain them.

“Farm workers in more than 600 sites are getting trained on how to preserve rock art and trimming vegetation that can be harmful to the sites,” she said.

More events are planned ahead of the Heritage Expo taking place at Liberty Mall on Heritage Day September 24.
