Conference tackling aviation issues

2008-11-24 00:00

THE aviation skills shortage, aviation and the environment, and investing in airport infrastructure are some of the issues being discussed at the African-Indian Ocean Regional Air Navigation conference in Durban.

Hundreds of delegates are attending the conference at the Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre. It ends this week.

The conference aims to address efficiency and navigation planning issues in the AFI Region.

In his opening address, Premier S’bu Ndebele said that responding to the aviation skills shortage, to problems of regulation and maintenance, and to aviation and the environment issues in the light of global warming are important topics.

These issues need to be discussed in relation to the role Africa can play in strengthening the sector, he added.

In the keynote address, Transport Minister Jeff Radebe said air travel had evolved rapidly and he described the strides towards developing aviation as “immense and truly rewarding”.

He said that it is important to bring about efficient, viable, profitable and safe aviation for the public, which is increasingly using air travel.
