Constable accused of teenager’s murder granted R1?000 bail

2012-08-17 00:00

A 31-YEAR-OLD Taylor’s Halt police constable appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday accused of the murder of a teenager.

Constable Hlengiwe Mkhize, of Etsheni area in Vulindlela, is alleged to have shot and killed Mlindeli Ngcobo (15) with her service firearm.

Mlindeli, from Taylor’s Halt, who did not have a driver’s licence, was driving his family’s VW Golf on July 7 when he accidentally bumped into Mkhize’s car on Bulwer Road.

Mlindeni was with his sisters and a one-year-old child at the time.

The state alleges that he and Mkhize had agreed to go to a police station to report the accident. However, Mkhize allegedly fired two shots at Mlindeli’s car as he drove away from the scene, striking him in the head. He died in hospital.

Mkhize opened a case after the incident, alleging that Mlindeli had attempted to hijack her vehicle and that she had shot him in self-defence.

Her lawyer, Sabelo Skhakhane, yesterday asked for her to be released on bail, saying that she was breastfeeding her three-month-old child. She was released on R1 000 bail and will be back in court on September 20.

Mlindeli’s father, Sabukungiqonda Ngcobo, said he had spent sleepless nights following his son’s death.

“She may be released on bail, but what I want is justice. I will follow the trial to the end,” he said.

Ngcobo said his son had been helpful to the family, taking care of livestock and repairing their cars.
