Contest: Schoolboy hopes to boogie his way to Chicago

2010-02-20 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG schoolboy Jurad Nair will dance with the country’s best junior dancers today in the hope of winning Sony Entertainment Television’s Boogie Woogie Dance Competition.

The grade seven pupil at Deccan Road Primary is Pietermaritzburg’s only competitor. He will be up against 12 other dancers from around the country at Sun Coast Casino today. The winner of this round will represent South Africa in the international final in Chicago later this year.

Jurad is a self- taught dancer who choreographs his own routines. “I started by watching Bollywood movies,” he said. “I just dance to the rhythm and feel the beat.”

Last year he won the Little Stars Dance Competition, and in 2008 he was crowned “king” in the Aaja Nachle (Come Dance) competition.

Soon he will be flown to India to star in a Bollywood movie. “I am very, very excited to be in a movie,” he said.
