Contest: prizes for food gardeners

2010-06-14 00:00

THE KZN Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Rural Development Department and the province’s First Lady, Dr May Mkhize, launched the One Home One Garden Competition last week.

The competition aims to encourage households to plant their own food and care for their gardens.

MEC Lydia Johnson said the competition is in three stages. The competition will start at a ward level and the winners will compete at their district level. District winners will go through to compete at the provincial level.

The competition will culminate in a provincial awards ceremony. Prizes of between R500 up to R10 000 for the overall winners will be given at all stages.

The competition is open to all household gardeners. The categories include child-headed households, persons with disabilities, senior citizens, women, men and youths.

Criteria to be used in the judging include:

• Innovation and understanding of the area where the garden is situated.

• Nutritional diversity and agricultural practices.

Use of organic methods of gardening will be an added advantage and the size of the garden will not be a factor.

The competition is expected to start shortly.

The provincial awards ceremony is set for August 26.
