Contract killer sobs at sentence

2009-10-19 00:00

A CONTRACT killer, Sipho Nkosi (26), who shot dead a man at the request of a woman who offered to pay him R10 000 at KwaNongoma in northern KZN on October 20 last year, sobbed bitterly on Friday when Judge Pete Koen sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Nkosi pleaded guilty to the murder of Jabulani Ngema, who was ambushed on a footpath.

Ngema had just spent the weekend with his common-law wife, Busisiwe Zungu, the woman who allegedly masterminded the killing and alerted him that Ngema was coming.

Nkosi has offered to give evidence against Zungu, which Judge Koen said is his civic duty.

Koen said he was unable to find that Nkosi has shown genuine remorse by pleading guilty, because the offence occurred almost a year earlier.

The court was told Nkosi was arrested on another charge on October 12, and was questioned in connection with this case because the firearm found in his possession had been linked to the crime scene. He admitted his guilt.

In his plea explanation, Nkosi said he was contacted by Zungu in mid-2008.

She told him that she needed a person to “shoot her husband on her behalf”, and Nkosi obliged two weeks later.
