THE South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD), in conjunction with KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, has released the names of motorists convicted for driving under the influence of alcohol.

They are Dumisani Mkhize (31) from Edendale, who was found with an alcohol level of 0,21 mg. He was fined R12 000 and his driver’s licence was suspended for six months. Hilton Orsmond (65) from Merrivale was fined R9 000 for having an alcohol level of 0,30 mg. Elas Mashini from Pietermaritzburg was fined R18 000 for a 1,05 mg alcohol level. Both Orsmond and Mashini’s licences were not suspended.

Neelan Pillay from Northdale had his driver’s licence suspended for six months and was fined R10 000 for having an alcohol level of 0,22 mg.

Acting MEC for Transport Sbongiseni Dhlomo said the department has a working relationship with SADD in naming and shaming traffic offenders.

Caro Smith of the SADD said motorists will be embarrassed by the move and made to think twice before they drink and drive.

“It makes them realise that it is a criminal offence to drive under the influence of alcohol.”
