Convincing victory for defending champions KZN Inland

2013-11-14 00:00

THERE were only two KZN Inland Premier League club cricket matches played last weekend and the results were comprehensive victories for defending champions Standard and the resurgent Northern KZN Combined XI.

In the top-of-the-table clash at Wanderers Club, unrelenting pressure from both ends ensured that Standard bowled Varsity out for a meagre 83 in 39 overs. Marcel Frentzel returned the best figures of 10 overs, six maidens and three wickets for 16 runs.

Standard made short work of the run chase, smashing 85 without loss in just 13 overs, with Robin Elliott unbeaten on 53. The 10-wicket win cemented Standard’s position on top of the log.

At Settlers’ Park in Ladysmith, the Northern KZN Combined XI took advantage of a Lancashire attack that battled to find their line and length to score 251 for nine in their 50 overs. Shaun Fourie hit 47 and Imran Hoosen 36. There were a number of scores in the 20s to add to a wasteful 42 extras. Sashen Dorasamy (three for 29 in 10) and Vaughn Manuel (three for 36 in 10) were the pick of the Lancs attack.

In reply, the Woodlands-based Lancs first XI were dismissed for 138 in 24 overs.

Young KZN Inland fast bowler Matthew Pillans was stranded on 63 not out with 26 overs left. Lancs did not pace their run chase well. However, nothing can be taken away from the penetrative bowling performances of the Combined XIs Deon Lombard (four for 57 in nine) and Austin Mungaroo (three for 32 in seven).

The 113-run win leaves the Combined XI in a handy third place, alongside Masibemunye.

Scheduled fixtures for Sunday: Masibemunye vs Northern Combined XI (Dalry Park), Varsity vs Young Natalians (Varsity Oval) and Zingari vs Standard (Collegians Club).
