Cook helps Lions crush Knights

2014-10-27 00:00

STEPHEN Cook played a captain’s innings of 102 to lead the Highveld Lions to a crushing eight-wicket victory over the Knights in Bloemfontein yesterday.

His bowlers gave him full support when he won the toss and put the Knights in to bat on their home ground, applying a suffocating stranglehold and restricting the home team to a score of 205. The Lions were never tested and came home with almost 12 overs to spare.

The Knights knew they had to attack, and in their desperation offered too many loose deliveries, from which Cook and Alviro Petersen were able to maintain a healthy run-rate.

By the time Petersen fell to Shadley van Schalkwyk for 52 in the 25th over, they had put on 137 and the required run-rate was down to 2,8. Cook was caught off the bowling of Dillon du Preeze with just 15 runs needed, collecting 10 fours and a six.

The Knights, coming off a morale-boosting win on Friday, had been desperate to consolidate their mid-table position, but they could not break free from the discipline and pace of the Lions attack.

The teams go into the mid-season break with the Cobras on top of the log on 21 points, five ahead of the Dolphins and seven up on the Lions.
