Cop fatally wounded in uMlazi police raid

2010-03-25 00:00

A DURBAN policeman was shot and killed during a police raid in uMlazi on Tuesday night.

It is believed that Inspector Siphiwe Vilakazi and two colleagues from the uMlazi SA Police Service had tracked down suspects in N-section on Tuesday evening when the shoot-out occurred.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said the police officers had parked their patrol vehicle at the roadside and walked towards a shack, where a suspect was thought to be hiding.

Vilakazi had stayed behind to watch the vehicle.

Zwane said the police heard a gunshot while they were arresting the suspect.

“Vilakazi called for help. The members went to help him and noticed that he had a gunshot wound to his body,” he said.

Vilakazi was rushed to hospital but died en route.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner Mammunye Ngobeni has extended her condolences to Vilakazi’s family on behalf of the SAPS.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.

Anybody with information about the suspect should report to the nearest police station or call Crime Stop at 0860 010 111.
