Cop is first witness who saw stabbing at nightclub

2012-06-01 00:00

AN off-duty policeman testified yesterday that he was socialising at the Cafe Vacca Matta nightclub last year when he saw murder accused, Sherwin Cara, stab 20-year-old Juran Raman in his neck with a broken glass.

“I saw him, in a downward snapping motion, force the glass into the left side of Juran’s neck. Juran was standing and I saw him grab his neck. He turned around and blood sprayed from his wound onto people on the dance floor. Security from the casino intervened and I saw them take both parties into a back room. That’s the last I saw of them,” Constable Jason Pillay told regional court magistrate, Fikile Luvuno.

He stressed that he had at no stage seen Raman fall to the ground and said when club security officials took him away he was still walking, assisted by them.

Pillay is the first state witness to testify that he saw the stabbing take place. All the other state witnesses who have given evidence so far said their view was blocked at the crucial time.

Pillay said one of the reasons he could see was because he was 1,98 metres tall.

He was also “focused” on the incident as it involved people he knew and he had sensed a “problem”.

Pillay testified that he knows the accused, but only knew Raman by sight.

Pillay said he was standing at the bar when he noticed a “verbal” altercation on the dance floor start between his friend, Preshane Tayob, and Raman. He could not hear what they were saying, but from their body language and gestures it was clear that they were involved in an altercation.

Melanie Cara, Nikita Naidoo and Christopher Sibran, were all in the vicinity.

Pillay said it appeared to him as if Raman had apologised to Tayob, as he raised both his hands, and the situtation seemed to calm down.

He then saw Sherwin Cara approaching Raman with what looked like a broken glass and saw him stab Raman in his neck.

Cara has pleaded not guilty to murdering Raman. In a statement, he claimed Raman had lunged at him, knocking his whisky glass out of his hand and causing it to shatter on the floor. He said Raman fell and when he got up he saw he had been injured in his neck.

The case is proceeding.
