A POLICE constable from Mountain Rise police station shot himself in the head with his service pistol in front of his 26-year-old wife in Pietermaritzburg on Monday afternoon.

A motorist who saw the incident said she heard the wife crying for help next to the vehicle. Police have named the dead man as 28-year-old Armstrong Malibongwe Mpintso.

The incident happened in Mountain Rise at about 4.30 pm.

“I was driving past on Royston Road when I saw the woman crying.

“Later, as I was driving back from the Sobantu direction, I saw police vehicles and ambulances. At first I heard that a police officer had been shot by his colleague. Then later I heard that it was a suicide,” said the motorist, who asked not to be named.

Another motorist, who also asked not to be named, said the incident happened between the Hindu temple and Mosque on Royston Road.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the constable was with his wife in their vehicle when he pulled out a firearm and shot himself.
