Cop shoots woman dead over bungled parking

A POLICE officer has been arrested after he shot a woman whose Golf had bumped against a police van outside the Kempton Park police station.

Jeanette Odendaal (45) was shot several times at close range and died in her car on Tuesday evening, the Independent Complaints Directorate, which investigates incidents of police abuse, said in a statement yesterday.

ICD spokesperson Moses Dlamini said in a statement that a 38-year-old sergeant will appear court tomorrow.

Said Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant- Colonel ­Tshisikhawe Ndou, “It is still unknown what prompted the shooting.”

According to information available to Beeld, Odendaal went to the police station to lay a charge of disturbing the peace. She apparently struggled to park and in the process bumped a police van.

The sergeant walked out and shot Odendaal at close range before she could even open her door. He was arrested shortly after the shooting and the case was handed over to the ICD.

Kempton Park police spokesperson Captain Jethro Mtshali confirmed that Odendaal lived only a few kilometres from the station.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou said it is at this stage unclear what led to the shooting.

The ICD statement said it is unclear whether Odendaal spoke to the sergeant. He apparently heard a noise that sounded like a shot, took his firearm, walked out and shot Odendaal, the statement read.
