Cop was the wrong target for hijackers

2014-10-16 00:00

AN armed off-duty cop turned out to be the wrong target for two suspected hijackers with the blunder landing one of them in hospital.

The Phoenix policeman they took on was quick on the draw, and managed to shoot one of his attackers in the chest. The other fled on foot.

The injured man is now fighting for his life in the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital under police guard.

Investigators expect to arrest his accomplice soon. The fleet-footed officer emerged from the firefight unscathed.

It is understood that the officer had been walking to his car after attending temple in Palmview when the gunmen made their move.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said, “Two gunmen demanded his car keys at gunpoint and fired shots towards him after he had emerged from temple.

“The police officer returned fire and wounded a suspect and the other one fled. The injured suspect was arrested and taken to hospital for medical attention under police guard,” Naicker said.

“An unlicensed firearm, two magazines and live rounds were found in his possession. He will be charged for attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and will appear in court soon. The arrest of the suspect who fled is imminent,” he said.
