Cop17: Durban gears up for Enviro conference

2011-08-04 00:00

DURBAN will once again make world headlines as the city gets into gear for the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP17) scheduled for the end of this year.

A delegation from the United Nations and representatives from the eThekwini Municipality were tasked with ensuring things are in place ahead of the convention and announced yesterday that it was “all systems go”.

Coordinator Kevin Grose, who is part of the UN delegation, described Durban as the ideal host for the annual meeting that is held on a different continent every year.

“The impact of the convention should not be underestimated since 194 governments will be present to discuss environmental issues and search for solutions,” he said.

Grose revealed that South Africa will lead negotiations at the meeting at which participants will work around the clock to address as many global environmental challenges as possible.

Adjacent to the ICC, where the convention takes place, civil society organisations from all over the world will occupy the Exhibition Centre and have the opportunity to express their concerns.

The conference takes place from November 28 to December 9.
