Cop17: SAPS assures KZN Cabinet

2011-11-03 00:00

NORMAL policing will continue unhindered throughout KZN during the high profile COP17 (climate change conference) in Durban at the end of November. High ranking heads of states, as well as delegates from all over the world, are expected at the conference.

The provincial cabinet was given this assurance by the SA Police Service (SAPS) during its weekly meeting which took place in Ndwedwe yesterday. Cabinet members were in Ndwedwe for the “Taking Legislature to the People” sitting.

Provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni outlined the security force’s state of readiness to handle the event. Accompanied by a high-level delegation, the group gave details of initiatives and strategies planned to ensure that the conference runs smoothly.

Premier Zweli Mkhize said COP17 was important not only for the outcomes in the negotiations, but because it is happening in South Africa and in KwaZulu-Natal in particular.

“The whole world is focusing on us and we want to demonstrate that our country has effective and firm policing that can deal with any situation, as was evident when we hosted a great football World Cup last year.

“We have no doubt that again we will do a sterling job,” Mkhize said.
