Cope: KZN leaders stripped of powers

2010-12-10 00:00

THE national working committee (NWC) of the Congress of the People (Cope) has stripped its KwaZulu-Natal leadership of their powers and recommended that some leaders appear before the party’s disciplinary committee.

The convenor of the national task team appointed to look at the affairs of Cope in KZN, Ndzipho Khalipha, confirmed that some senior Cope officials will face disciplinary action, but declined to name them, saying only that they had been stripped of leadership responsibilities until February next year.

The Witness was reliably informed by sources within the organisation that Cope provincial secretary, Philip Mhlongo, tops the list of members to face disciplinary charges.

The NWC decision comes after two-months of internal squabbling in Cope KZN, which took a dramatic turn last month when six of the nine KZN regions passed a vote of no confidence in all Cope’s KZN leaders. This followed allegations of mismanagement of R1,4 million that was allocated to Cope by the KZN Legislature.

Last week, another Cope faction announced the axing Mhlongo, who was replaced by Bheki Khuse.
