Cope to gain from turmoil

2009-04-14 00:00

The latest Ipsos Markinor poll indicates that the Congress of the People (Cope) could be the main beneficiary of a slight erosion within the ANC support base. The poll also showed that 37% of likely IFP voters admire ANC president Jacob Zuma.

The poll was on likely voter turnout and was carried out nationally between February and March this year among ANC supporters on their relationship with the party and how it may have changed. The pollsters found that just over a third (36%) of those likely to go to the polls and vote for the ANC in the election agreed that the different opinions of the factions and leaders within the party make them uneasy. About 34% of ANC voters said they trust the party less today than they did in 1994. Although they indicated that they will probably vote for the ANC, 19% indicated that even in this 11th hour they will assume a wait and see approach abd want to see in which direction the party is going.
