Cope ‘won’t join ANC’

Cape Town — Congress of the People presidential candidate Mvume Dandala has strongly denied that his party is in a crisis, saying he is confident that it is doing well and will “surprise many people” on April 22.

Addressing the Cape Town Press Club yesterday, Dandala reiterated that his party have no plans to go into a coalition with the ANC.

He called for an independent commission of Inquiry into the arms deal, saying it is a “blot” that continues to stain South Africa’s reputation.

Dandala declined to predict what kind of percentage of the vote he hopes Cope will attain in the elections. “Whatever percentage we get, remember, we are only 100 days old,” he said.

On Cope’s choice of controversial cleric Allan Boesak to lead its campaign in the Western Cape, Dandala said: “Were it not for the value of forgiveness, I don’t believe we would have the country we have now as South Africans.

"It would be unfortunate for us, given the qualities that Dr Boesak brings to the life of this country to ... be selective about what values we believe will make our society. We believe that he has much to bring and add to our society … ”
