Copper thief shot by quarry guards

2014-05-19 00:00

A BRAZEN copper thief was allegedly shot and wounded by security guards while trying to steal cables at a sand quarry near Copesville on Friday night.

Sources linked to the Afrisam Quarry on Old Greytown Road said the quarry has been hit hard by cable theft; the thieves come and steal the cables and the security guards fire warning shots into the air, but the thieves allegedly have a very blasé attitude and continue their plundering.

In the latest incident, one of the security guards allegedly fired a shot that hit the suspected thief in the thigh, fracturing his femur. ER24 paramedics attended to the injured man and he was taken to Northdale Hospital.

A source linked to the quarry, who cannot be named because he is not allowed to communicate with the media, said security guards there had been faced with regular theft lately.

“They get in here all the time.”

He said the criminals target underground cables, spare cable and steel.

Another source within the company who cannot be named said they were dealing with a crisis.

“For the past several years we have been dealing with this problem. They steal our copper and they steal what we have in stock … It is not only the cables that they steal, they also steal the steel.”

Police were unable to confirm the incident yesterday, saying their systems were down.
