Cops arrest 4 for stolen weapons

2013-09-17 00:00

ONE of the weapons recovered during a sting operation by the Chatsworth crime intelligence unit at the weekend, was taken during an armed robbery and also used in another robbery earlier this year, police said.

The provincial police arrested four suspects for being in possession of unlicensed firearms with ammunition in the Savannah Park and Shongweni Dam areas respectively.

Among the suspects was a 24-year-old Somali national, who was found with a Barreta 9 mm pistol with 13 live rounds of ammunition.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulane Zwane said the firearm had been used in an armed robbery earlier this year. “When the [details of the] firearm was circulated, it was discovered that it was taken in an armed robbery which took place in the Umhlali area during the month of February this year,” said Zwane.

The other three suspects — between the ages of 21 and 26 — were caught yesterday morning in the Shongweni Dam area.

Zwane said they were found with one Norinco pistol with the serial number filed off. They also found another two homemade firearms.
