Cops catch knife killer suspect

2008-10-07 00:00

A year after the brutal murder of a Sunningdale woman, police have finally arrested a suspect in her murder.

Lauren Olivier (28) was stabbed 19 times in her luxurious home in Meadow Lane in Sunningdale near Umhlanga in September 2007.

Her two-month-old son, Jack, was discovered sitting in her pool of blood when security guards responded to a panic alarm.

Her murder sent shockwaves through the close-knit community and brought thousands of condolence messages. It is believed that her husband Tony and baby Jack relocated to the United Kingdom after the murder.

Police spokesman Supterintendent Muzi Mngomezulu said that members of the organised crime unit and the housebreaking unit tracked down the 25-year-old suspect at his homestead in Inanda on Monday afternoon.

The suspect had been on the run since the murder. The team conducted interviews with the suspect’s family during the investigation. “The team found the suspect hiding inside the house. He did not resist arrest,” he said.

The chairman of the Durban north and Umhlanga community policing forum, Haden Searles, said Olivier’s husband is “pleased” with the arrest. “He is happy about the arrest but it has opened up a lot of hurt and bad memories for him. It was such a tragic incident,” he said.

Searles praised police for their dedication.

“The community is very proud of the police. They didn’t let Lauren’s murder turn into another cold case. They have been fantastic from the start.”

The suspect is due to appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court today.
