Cops link suspect to hit-and-run crash site

SOLID detective work has resulted in the arrest of a hit-and-run suspect more than a month after a woman jogger was run over and killed on the South Coast.

Margate police painstakingly pieced together the events that claimed the life of Carol Marais (45) during a 6 am Sunday run on the R61 near San Lameer holiday resort on March 3. A case of culpable homicide was opened after the driver fled the scene.

Working with bits of a damaged BMW X5, police found the vehicle at a repair shop in Durban.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the vehicle matched the debris at the scene and had traces of Marais’s blood on it. The luxury SUV was impounded and taken to Port Shepstone for forensic examination.

It was later found that the driver, a 31-year-old man, had allegedly filed a false accident report in Eshowe five days after Marais was killed. He allegedly used the police report to lodge a claim with his insurers, Old Mutual, said Zwane.

On Monday, police secured a warrant of arrest and arrested the suspect. He appeared in Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning.

A local newspaper that interviewed Marais’s family a few days after her death reported how they had looked for her after she had failed to answer her cellphone.

After two hours, they went to police. “I was then informed that a woman had been knocked down and killed and the description given to me was all I needed to confirm that it was her,” the paper quoted a man described as her partner, Eric Nosana (45).

Marais was reportedly found on the roadside, severely injured, and vehicle parts were found at the scene.
