Cop’s ‘threats’ after smash

2008-05-05 00:00

A policeman whose car crashed into the gate of a property in Cleland on Friday night allegedly waved his loaded gun at witnesses, threatening to shoot them, and then hit a woman over the head with his pistol when she tried to intervene.

The accident, which took place at around 10 pm, was witnessed by the neighbours of the damaged house.

Though no one saw who was responsible for the accident, it is believed that the driver lost control of the vehicle after taking a corner.

It is alleged by some witnesses that after the accident, the policeman jumped out of the car in a frazzled state, whipped out his loaded gun and waved it around saying: “I am a policeman, I will shoot you”.

One neighbour alleged that the policeman assaulted her by hitting her over the head with his gun after she tried to intervene.

When the owners of the damaged property were notified of the incident, they rushed home and were horrified to find the damaged car in their yard.

“My gate is totally smashed,” said one of the owners.

She waited for the Mountain Rise police to come out and was puzzled that they didn’t take any statements.

It was only after the Alexandra Road police came that statements were taken and on Saturday the neighbour who claimed to have been assaulted by the officer also laid a charge against him.

Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said the incident is being investigated.

“It will be treated as a complaint against the police and investigated. If there is any evidence to prove he acted criminally, then the necessary departmental and criminal procedures will be taken against him.”
