Cops to keep a close eye on kwaMashu

2014-02-26 00:00

POLICE from the elite National Intervention Unit (NIU) will monitor political hotspots in kwaMashu until after the elections.

Yesterday, provincial police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni visited the community. “This [the visit]is to assess how our interventions were assisting to ensure that people’s democratic right to freedom of movement, association, expression and safety and security has been enhanced.

Over the past 12 days four people have been shot in the area. An NFP and an IFP member were killed and two NFP members were injured.

“On February 15 when we heard that two women were attacked in the area in what is an alleged incident of political intolerance, the Public Order Policing Unit and the NIU members were deployed,” said Ngobeni.

She urged political leaders to call on their members to remain calm.

A detective task team was also set up to investigate incidents of murder and attempted murder that were reported in the area recently, she said.

“We will be holding cordon and search operations, stop and searches, intelligence-driven crime prevention operations and suspect raids regularly from now until after the elections. So far the community is very positive with the security presence and are co-operating with police on the ground,” Ngobeni said.
