Corruption Watch: Publish names of Nkandla contractors, explain tenders

2013-01-29 00:00

CORRUPTION Watch wants the Minister of Public Works, Thulas Nxesi, to provide the names of the companies or individuals who were awarded contracts to undertake the upgrades on President Jacob Zuma’s home in Nkandla.

“The information on the awarding of contracts does not fall within information relating to security measures and we see no reason for keeping this away from the public,” Corruption Watch executive director David Lewis said in a statement.

“Considering the public money spent on the upgrade, it is appropriate for the minister to reveal the details of the tendering process as well as explain how the amounts mentioned in Sunday’s press briefing were arrived at and budgeted for.

“Transparency around these issues will go a long way towards establishing public trust in government,” said Lewis.

He said they also wanted to know whether projects that fell under the department’s “prestige portfolio” were subjected to procurement rules laid out in the public finance management legislation.

Nxesi’s spokesperson, Phillip Masilo, told The Witness they had been in meetings the whole day and had not yet received the letter.

“Once we have received it, we will look into the request and apply our minds to it.”
