Cosmic catastrophe and darkness at noon ... or just another hoax?

2012-12-13 00:00

A MESSAGE has been doing the rounds recently on BBM, e-mail and SMS warning people of a total blackout all around the world between December 22 and Christmas.

The message states that the U.S. space agency, Nasa, has predicted total darkness due to a huge realignment of the cosmos.

“If possible, avoid travelling during the third week of December 2012 as all modes of communication may fail,” the message reads.

“U.S. scientists predict total darkness on planet Earth for three days. It is not the end of the world, it is just an alignment of the universe where Sun and Earth will align for the first time.”

The message warns that the aligning of the planets could lead to “natural calamities on Earth”.

The message has disturbed a number of employees at a Pietermaritzburg store that is part a prominent nationwide retail group.

“They’ve all been receiving these BBMs and they’re frightened to come to work after December 22,” said a woman who declined to be named. She said the employees had wanted time off work because of the predictions.

When contacted by The Witness yesterday afternoon, Nasa dismissed the message.

“Nasa does not predict that. The message is a hoax” said a space agency spokesperson, Beth Dickey, in Washington.

The Witness asked some of its readers on its Facebook page what their thoughts were about the message, especially given reports that an ancient Mayan calendar has reportedly predicted that the world will end on December 21, Friday next week. Here’s what some of them had to say:

Nadine Franzsen: “It will be just another day to me. I will probably forget about it until I read a status update on fb on the day.”

Keith Branch: “The Mayans couldn’t find a bigger stone to carry with the calendar. That’s it, simple. We had the whole Y2K story and computers crashing.”

Barry Meintjes: “We are due another natural catastrophe sooner or later. If it was to be in a few days’ time, from planetary alignment, then there would have been some major geographical disturbances already in evidence. Roll on Armageddon, the Rapture or whatever you want to call it. Maybe there may be a few aware beings left to start again and not stuff up the planet again. Mother Nature has a wonderful way of evening the score.”

Craig Cumming: “It’s not about the end of the physical world. It is a shift in consciousness. We are moving from the head or ego to the heart or soul. It is the shift from fear-based consciousness to love-based consciousness or from separation to unity.”

Gavin Coles: ”Every king who ruled the Mayans ruled with brute force and rewrote the Mayan history and calendars according to what they believed and were told by the shamans. But this is South Africa and we go the other way so it won’t have an effect on us. And besides, we have Julius Malema to fight for us.”
