Council’s piano can be fixed

MSUNDUZI’S Steinway concert piano, damaged when rainwater poured through a leak in the city hall roof, can be fixed and at a cost of R218 000, far less than was expected.

The damage was discovered during the “Last Night of the Proms” concert last month, when pianist Christopher Duigan found that the piano was unplayable because of water damage.

There were fears that the piano, valued at R1,5 million, might have been damaged beyond repair.

But after the municipality submitted a claim to its insurance company and an assessment was done, it was found that the piano could be repaired.

Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said the insurance company specified that it wanted the company that repaired the pianos at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, to fix the Steinway, and it had already been contracted to do the work.

He added that R100 000 a month had been made available to install dehumidifyers and air conditioners in the storerooms where the council’s two pianos are kept, one at the Winston Churchill Theatre and the Steinway at the city hall.

Mayor Chris Ndlela said the news that the piano could be fixed for R218 000 would “sound like music to the ears of the ratepayers, particularly those interested in music”.
