Country’s best junior squash players in Epworth for Top Schools clash

2014-07-31 00:00

EPWORTH School and Collegians Club welcome the country’s best junior squash players this weekend.

They hit town for the annual SA Top Schools tournament starting from tomorrow. Each province has a boys’ and girls’ team with provincial and SA ranked players in the line-up. Play-offs are on Saturday afternoon, with the finals at Epworth on Sunday, from 8 am.

The girls’ title should see a struggle between St Mary’s DSG, Pretoria (Northerns) and St Mary’s School, Waverley (Gauteng), both with strong teams. DSG has Makgoasi Peloakgosi, a top-ranked SA U19 player in their ranks, while St Mary’s Waverley has Panache Sithole, an SA U16 player.

St Anne’s and Epworth represent KZN, the latter getting into the tournament due to the withdrawal of Eastern Gauteng. On their day, these teams can cause upsets and are worth watching.

Other schools participating are Springfield Convent School (WP), Clarendon School for Girls (Border), Eunice High School (Free State) and Kingswood College (EP).

On the boys front, a winner is hard to predict. Rondebosch Boys’ High (WP) are the defending champs but they will be strongly challenged by St Andrew’s School (Free State) and Kingswood College. Other participants are past champions Selborne College (Border), Pretoria Boys’ High (Northerns) and Paarl Boys’ High (Boland). KZN is represented by Glenwood High School, while Northcliff High School flies the colours for Gauteng.
