2013-04-30 00:00

THE fifth annual Wildeklawer Top Schools Festival is being hosted by Maritzburg College to celebrate their 150th anniversary.

Eighteen of the top rugby-playing schools in the country will do battle over May 2-4 at College. There are also two invitation teams, one from the Sharks and the other from the sponsors. The Sharks XV have been put together by Rudolf Straueli and include players from KZN schools. The Wildeklawer XV have players from Western Cape and Boland schools.

Grey College is the only school that has an unbeaten record at this festival having played in all four to date. This year they lost a match against Outeniqua at the Kearsney Festival. Maritzburg College are playing for the second time and Glenwood for the third year. Grey HS from Port Elizabeth and Noordkaap are two schools playing for the first time.

The rugby also involves age-group teams and includes a netball tournament of the top girl netball school sides. The latter will be played at the College Indoor Centre on two courts over Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Fixtures on Goldstones at College will run from 7.50 am to 5.15 pm as the last match begins at 4 pm on each of the two days. On Thursday there will be a short opening ceremony just before the penultimate game.
