Couple in limbo after pastor who wed them spells curse

2015-04-01 00:00

A COUPLE who recently married in Bloemfontein believe the pastor who wed them has pronounced a curse on their marriage and is withholding their marriage certificate.

The independent pastor told the woman in an SMS that she “prostituted” herself by living with her husband before they wed and must now suffer.

Luzette Wheeler says Jannie Spangenberg, a family friend, performed the ceremony for her and her husband William in January, but they have been battling since then to get their marriage certificate.

Luzette said after a long series of e-mails and texts between her and the pastor, he told her there is a curse on her marriage, but that he only realised “to [his] shock!!” at a seminar after the ceremony that they had committed a sin by living together before they wed.

Luzette said the pastor knew beforehand that she and William were living together.

Spangenberg said they had words after Luzette accused him of not doing his job.

He said he never cursed the marriage, but pointed out that the Bible said a curse was attached to it because they “lived in sin” for seven years and now had to suffer.

He denied that he was withholding the certificate, saying some documents had been mislaid in the Kimberley Home Affairs office but had now been sent to the couple.
