Couple killed in Toti bridge accident

2013-10-28 00:00

A MAN and his wife were killed yesterday after he lost control of his vehicle on the N2 southbound in Amanzimtoti.

Bad weather is suspected to be a contributing factor to the accident. The vehicle went over the bridge into the river.

RTI spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said: “The river was full because of all the rain. The driver and his wife drowned before the paramedics could get to them and ascertain their level of injury.”

The accident came amid heavy, damaging rain along the whole South Coast.

Trees were uprooted, mudslides occurred in some places and approximately 50 families had to be evacuated after their homes were flooded.

By lunchtime yesterday, drivers were still being diverted onto alternative routes after the N2 northbound at Mtwalume was closed the day before due to mudslides, emergency personnel said.

Port Shepstone councillor Doug Rawlings said over 300 millimetres of rain fell from lunchtime on Saturday until yesterday morning, and some low-level bridges in the area had been breached.
