Court clerk apologises after snub to magistrate

2010-03-18 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG Magistrate’s Court clerk Wendy George yesterday apologised to magistrate Ashin Singh for the manner she had left the court on Tuesday, acknowledging it was wrong.

He accepted the apology.

George was called to appear before Singh on a charge of contempt of court after flouting his instruction not the leave the courtroom in the wake of an altercation over administrative issues.

She later filed complaints with the chief magistrate and her union over the way in which Singh had spoken to her, caused her to be arrested for contempt of court and made her appear before him in the dock.

She confirmed yesterday that, despite having apologised for her conduct, she intends to proceed with the grievances she has lodged against Singh.

Sources who wished to remain anonymous told The Witness that George had no option other than to apologise, after Singh had threatened to put her in jail if she did not.

Colleagues rallied to support George, saying there was no call to publicly humiliate her as there are alternative disciplinary procedures that ought to have been followed.
