Cow causes collision — eight hurt

2011-03-23 00:00

SEVEN people in a bakkie and one person in a car were injured after they hit a cow on Caluza Road in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg, on Sunday.

Both vehicles were severely damaged.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said the driver of the car was in a dark stretch of the road and did not see the cow crossing the road. The driver was unable to move out of the way and hit the side of the cow.

Just behind the car was the bakkie, which rear-ended the car.

Five passengers in the bakkie suffered serious injuries.

Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Brian Zuma said owners of cattle must always ensure that their animals are kept in an enclosed area to avoid dangers on the road.

“A person whose animal is believed to have caused an accident is fined, but usually owners don’t come forward and claim the carcass when their animal has died.”

Owners of cattle are subject to a fine or their animals are impounded when they are spotted straying on the roads.

Jeff Wicks of Netcare 911 reported on Monday that a couple were critically injured when their car struck a cow on the N5 outside Bethlehem in the Free State on Saturday night.
