Craft bazaar: ‘echo’ shows appreciation with art event

2009-11-26 00:00

THE 15th Echo Craft Bazaar was officially opened at Project Gateway yesterday evening. The three-day event coincides with Echo’s 30th anniversary, which was celebrated last Wednesday.

The bazaar was originally conceptualised by the Tatham Art Gallery and former Echo managing editor Derek Alberts.

On display yesterday were a number of art and craft wares by different craftsmen and artists. Declaring the bazaar open, Echo editor Dumisani Zondi welcomed everyone and those still coming to the exhibition.

“It feels great to witness the profound talent shown by craftsmen promoting and selling their wares. Echo supports this talent of an exceptional standard and it’s a privilege to be associated with this initiative as it promotes self employment,” he said.

He said for Echo this is a way of giving back to the very communities that have supported the newspaper since its establishment in 1979.

One of the crafters, Trisch Manderson, has taken her skill to imprisoned juvenile boys. She said she teaches them fabric painting and does some mosaic work.

“… it feels so good seeing young people spending much of their time learning to do something constructively,” Manderson said.

The bazaar is open from 10 am to 4 pm daily until Sunday.
