Crash: Burst tyre blamed for two dead and 17 injured

2011-08-02 00:00

A MINIBUS taxi overturned on the N2 freeway in the Mfazazane area near Hibberdene yesterday morning, killing a woman and a 12-month-old baby and injuring 17 people.

Police and emergency services rushed to the scene of the accident and found the taxi lying on its roof on the southbound lane. Two women and a baby were trapped underneath the overturned vehicle.

The Jaws of Life had to be used to free them from the wreckage.

According to police reports one woman was airlifted to hospital by Emergency Medical Rescue Services. The other woman and a baby (approximately 12 months old) were declared dead at the scene.

It has not yet been established, but police suspect that the deceased could be mother and child.

“The deceased woman had a baby carrier strapped to her and the baby was found close to her, but we are still investigating if she was that infant’s mother,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

Fourteen other injured people, including the driver, were removed from the vehicle and taken to the Port Shepstone provincial hospital.

At the time of going to press, hospital spokesperson Mpendulo Mbili said 13 people from the accident were attended to in the casualty ward.

“One patient has been admitted for serious injuries, four were treated and discharged and eight are awaiting review and x-rays.”

The taxi will be sent for forensic investigation but it is suspected that a burst tyre could have been the cause of the accident.

A culpable homicide docket is also being investigated by the Hibberdene police.

The N2 southbound highway was closed off to traffic for a couple of hours for paramedics to attend to the injured and for the accident to be cleared off the roadway.
