Crash: Cane truck crushes car on N2

2012-06-01 00:00

A HORROR crash on the N2 in Amanzimtoti claimed the life of a man yesterday after his car crashed into an 18-wheeler sugar cane truck.

Netcare 911 Chris Botha said reports from the scene were that the car was travelling south bound on the N2 when the driver appeared to slump across the steering wheel, veer across the median and smash into the truck travelling north bound.

The collision caused the truck driver to lose control of the vehicle. He crossed over the median and across the southbound lanes before coming to a stop down an embankment.

“The crumpled remains of the car was found next to the southbound lane with the driver still trapped in the mangled wreckage.

“Tragically he died due to the extensive injuries that he sustained. Firemen used the Jaws of Life to free the body from the wreckage,” Botha added.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said a case of culpable homicide is being investigated.

Zwane said: “The deceased’s next of kin has not been contacted as yet therefore his identity will not be released.”

The N2 southbound lanes remained closed until after 1 pm while two heavy goods tow trucks recovered the remains of the sugar cane truck.
