Crash kills 2 after Burry Stander race

2013-07-01 00:00

TWO men in a Corsa bakkie were killed and four others in another bakkie were hurt and taken to hospital when the two vehicles collided on the Port Edward road near Glenmore Beach yesterday.

The four who were injured had just taken part in the annual Burry Stander Sardine Classic, KZN MTB Commission chairperson Charles Roberts told The Witness.

“We’d all left and were returning home from the Sardine Classic,” he said, adding that for the first time this year, it had been ridden in memory of the late Burry Stander, who was killed after being hit by a taxi while cycling last year.

“As we were driving up, a white Corsa was coming down and it was going a bit fast. It lost control and it crashed head on into the car that was at the front,” said Roberts.

In the car were a father, his son, daughter and a friend. They were taken to a hospital in Margate where they were to receive medical attention.

“The two other guys in the Corsa were killed on impact,” he said.

Of the cyclists, he said: “They were lucky to make it out alive. They had to be pulled out of the car using the jaws of life. The two in the front weren’t as badly hurt because they had airbags.”

It was the two passengers in the back — the daughter and the friend — who were badly hurt, he added.

He speculated that for the cars to be smashed up the way they were, the Corsa must have been driving at a high speed. He added that a bottle of Savanna fell out of the small bakkie and landed under it.
