Crash kills Newcastle woman

AN accident between Memel and Vrede in the Free State ended the life of a young Newcastle woman on Monday night.

Free State police spokesperson Colonel Thandi Mbambo told The Witness yesterday that the woman’s husband was in a critical condition after the accident.

“They were travelling from Johannesburg to Newcastle when it is believed the husband lost control of the car and it rolled,” said Mbambo.

She said the accident happened around 7.30 pm on Monday night about 10 km outside Memel.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said the road they were travelling on was in a very bad state and that their car may have hit a pothole.

“The young married couple in their mid 20s were both ejected from their vehicle as it rolled and the woman was pronounced dead on the scene. The young man had suffered moderate injuries, but was also in a state of shock and hypothermia,” said Jackson.

She said paramedics said it was difficult to get to the patients as the road was very poorly lit and they had to drive very cautiously on the rutted and potholed road. “When they arrived, they immediately started treating the patient and warming the blankets and sheets on the ambulance heater so that they could get the young man’s body temperature up.”
