‘Create your own jobs, KZN’

2008-02-22 00:00

KZN Finance and Economic Development MEC Zweli Mkhize has called on individuals to take responsibility for economic liberation and financial independence in the build up to the tabling of the provincial budget.

Mkhize was addressing more than 7 000 people at kwaNgcolosi in Hillcrest, during the final leg of his pre-budget road-show, on the eve of presenting his 2008/09 provincial budget yesterday.

Mkhize traditionally visits areas across KZN to listen to the views, suggestions and tips that people have regarding the allocation of their budget, before presenting the KZN budget at the provincial Legislature.

During this current financial year, Mkhize tabled the R43,5 billion budget, with KZN allocated the largest share of the national budget.

This reflects an increase of 17% in the allocation of the KZN provincial budget when compared to the 2006/07 budget of R37,2 billion.

This year’s budget is expected to increase as the bulk of the budget is spent on salaries for educators.

Mkhize called on communities to generate their own incomes. “You have endless business opportunities available to you.

“You need to exploit the resources you have at your disposal, including farming, finding your niche and starting a business that you are skilled or talented in can make you a successful entrepreneur.”
