Cricket: Mixed fortunes for Inland women

2009-10-05 00:00

AFTER Saturday’s highs it, was Sunday’s lows for the KZN Inland women’s cricket team.

In their back-to-back 50-over matches at the Varsity Oval, captain Cherri Cannon’s Inland side, under professional coach Paul Atkins, thumped Griqualand West by 127 runs on Saturday before being savaged by eight wickets against Free State yesterday.

On Saturday, Inland scored 279 for three and then bundled Griquas out for 152, with five overs to spare.

Pippa Payne scored an undefeated 101 off only 77 balls and Bianca Sakoor took four for 18 with the ball.

After an opening stand of 71, there was a match-winning 165-run partnership for the third wicket between Payne and Natalie Archer, at virtually a run a ball.

Yesterday was a different story. Again asked to bat, Inland lost four wickets with the score on 16 and were 19 for six at one point, so let’s forget about this one, shall we?

SCORES IN BRIEF

Inland 279/3 in 50 overs (P Payne 101*, N Archer 56, C Cannon 34, M Steenkamp 33). Griquas 152 (T van Wyk 68; B Sakoor 4-18, Sarena Ferreira 2-20). Inland won by 127 runs.
