Cricket: SA U19 in triangular series

2012-01-10 00:00

NO team went through the U19 Cubs Week unbeaten, but the Sunfoil Dolphins were one of three sides to lose just one game. The Dolphins lost against the Highveld Lions on Friday’s day four. The Lions had lost against the Cape Cobras on day 3. The Dolphins won their game on the first day against the Cobras who were the other side to lose just this one game.

It was disappointing for the Dolphins against the Highveld Lions that they could not bowl them out for less than the 196 scored by the local boys, after being sent in to bat. The major contributions came from Senuran Muthusamy (49), Mark Airey (35) and Chad Bowes (31).

When the Lions were 113 for six it looked as if the Dolphins were well in control but a 77-run unbeaten partnership between Shayleen Pillay and David Rhoda took them to a four-wicket win. Pillay had also been the pick of the Lions bowlers with three wickets for 22 runs.

On the last day, the Dolphins won their match against the Chevrolet Warriors where Marco Marais had fought a lone battle scoring 126. When he came to the wicket the score was 46 for five. Marais struck 16 boundaries, with eight of them clearing the boundary rope.

The Dolphins reached the 201 required in the 48th over, after Sumanth Sunkari (52) and Muthusamy had shared in a 114-run third-wicket partnership. Muthusamy ended unbeaten on 77 taking the Dolphins to a six-wicket win.

Theunis de Bruyn scored the only century on the fourth day to take the Nashua Titans to a win against the Chevrolet Knights. He faced only 100 deliveries, making 126, which included eight fours and six sixes. He and opening batsman Murray Coetzee put on 163 for the second wicket.

Highlight of the last day was the seven wickets captured by the Cape Cobra’s Travis Muller in 8,5 overs conceding 35 runs. This enabled the Cobras to win by 116 runs against the Nashua Titans.

The only side to lose all their games was the Chevrolet Knights. They lost by eight wickets against the Bizhub Highveld Lions. An opening partnership of 152 between Paul de Chaud (85) and Tshepang Dithole (40), laid the foundation for the Lions win.
