Cricket: Umpiring coaching course nest month open to all

2009-08-28 00:00

IT is no secret that there is a shortage of quality umpires in South Africa, particularly at club level, and to this end the KZN Inland Cricket Union are taking proactive steps to improve the situation, writes JONATHAN COOK.

“Cricket South Africa have agreed to send their two franchise level coaches, Johan Cloete and Murray Brown, to Pietermaritzburg to run an umpiring course next month for all prospective and past umpires in our region,” said Garry Hampson.

Hampson, manager of playing affairs at the KZNICU, said it was an opportunity for those interested, as “there is now a definite career path for umpires, some of whom are able to make a career from umpiring”.

The course is open to anyone, from beginners to previously qualified umpires, both schoolchildren and adults.

Those interested are encouraged to attend both phases, as they are both being held over weekends. The first takes place on September 5 and 6, with the second phase the following weekend. The duration is 9 am to 5 pm each day.

To attend the course, please e-mail details to Hampson at kznicuplayingaffairs@futurenet.co.za or contact 033 345 5387 by today.
