Cricket-crazy beauty gets a shot at stardom

2009-04-21 00:00

Riona Singh, Durban’s finalist in the IPL Miss Bollywood competition, had no idea that a fun day at the cricket would give her a shot at Bollywood stardom.

The 19-year-old Westville student was chosen during yesterday’s match between the Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab to represent the Kolkata Knight Riders in the competition of which the winner will star in a Bollywood movie.

Still in shock over her win, Singh said that she had no intention of entering the competition and was “bowled over” by being selected for the contest.

“I have always been a cricket fan. I just love the game. When I heard that they chose me, I didn’t believe it,” she said.

She said she was watching the game with some friends when she was approached by an IPL official who told her that she was going to be interviewed. “It was weird but I agreed. The interview went well because I was myself. Although I didn’t expect to win, it was great,” she said.

Once her name was announced, Singh said that her friends immediately started celebrating and making plans to drum up support for her.

Singh will join the other 49 finalists on May 25 when the public will get to vote for the winner.

The winner will walk away with R50 000 in prizes in addition to the chance at stardom.

Cricket-crazy Singh said Sourav Ganguly and Chris Gayle are her favourite cricket players.
