Crime: Burglars break into 5 shops at Liberty Mall

2012-06-27 00:00

BURGLARS broke into five shops at Liberty Midlands Mall this week, having gained entrance into the complex through the roof.

“They removed the ceiling boards to the shops and stole a large, undisclosed amount of cash, 150 cellular phones, clothing and keys,” said police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane.

The ceiling of one of the shops was damaged, but nothing was taken from within that particular premises.

A police source said the suspects did not go inside the mall, but moved through the roof from shop to shop.

He said at least one shop, out of the five, had an alarm system.

Zwane said this was the first such incident at the mall.

The centre’s acting manager, Muhammad Varachia, confirmed the incident. “Initial investigations indicate that entry was gained through the ceiling during the early hours of Monday morning,” he said.

Varachia urged shoppers to immediately report any suspicious activity at the mall to security or centre management teams.

“The safety and security of our tenants and shoppers are at all times of upmost importance. Additional security measures are being implemented with immediate effect,” he said.

No arrests have been made.
