Crime: Robbers die in shoot-out with police

2008-05-28 00:00

THREE armed men died during a shootout with police that also left a police dog critically injured, during a failed armed robbery in Durban yesterday evening.

Two other members of the armed gang were in serious condition and another one was critical. The incident happened at Boxer Cash and Carry in Isipingo, south of Durban.

Netcare911 spokesman Chris Botha said no police officers were injured, but one of their dogs was airlifted to a vet with a bullet wound.

Superintendent Danelia Veldhuizen said police received information that there was a robbery at the shop. This was after the criminals forced everyone, including customers, to lie down.

“When the police arrived they couldn’t see anything happening, as they saw customers going on with their shopping. Police left, but soon they received another call saying that there were armed men in the shop,” said Veldhuizen.

On their return to the shop, police searched inside, only to encounter the criminals hiding behind a cold room. The criminals opened fire and police shot back. Veldhuizen said no customers were injured.
