Crime: cops kill fleeing mugger

FOUR robbers who held up a woman at knifepoint and demanded her handbag and cellphone in Alan Paton Avenue were arrested in the early hours of yesterday morning after a car chase through the city.

A fifth suspect died after he was shot during the chase.

Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said police patrolling at about 1.15 am heard a woman scream and saw that she was being confronted by three men.

The men, with two companions, rushed to a vehicle parked nearby and drove off towards the city, chased by policemen in an unmarked police vehicle.

"When all attempts to stop the suspects failed, police fired at the vehicle and managed to stop it near the intersection of Commercial [Chief Albert Luthuli] and Victoria Road," said Budhram.

It was discovered that one of them, aged 22, had been shot and wounded in the back of his head, He died in Edendale Hospital.

The other suspects, aged between 22 and 26, were arrested on charges of robbery and will appear in court today.
