Crime: man refuses to become mugging victim

2008-12-15 00:00

A 56-year-old man retaliated as two armed thugs tried to rob him of his laptop in a parking lot on Pietermaritz Street in the city centre on Friday evening.

The man, who asked not to be named, said two young men followed him from a nearby tavern to the parking lot, where they approached him, both carrying firearms, and one a knife.

When the second man took a swing at him with the knife, the father of three jumped back and started shouting. The assailants ran back to the tavern with their weapons in full sight of the public, leaving him unharmed.

“I’ve been attacked before and I refuse to give in to crime,” he said. “I knew I was being followed. And I was aware of my surroundings.”

He firmly believes that the presence of the tavern encourages criminal activity in the area.

After the ordeal, he reported the matter to the police, but warns The Witness readers — particularly women — about the lack of security in the area.

Police said no case was opened in connection with the incident.

N3 incident: Truck on fire near Liberty Mall

A truck carrying frozen chickens burst into flames on the N3 highway close to the Liberty Midlands Mall yesterday.

The truck’s tyres caught alight after its brakes overheated. It wasn’t long before flames spread to the body of the vehicle. At this point the driver removed the truck’s cab to prevent it from igniting and alerted the fire department.

Shoppers at the mall reportedly heard a loud bang. Msunduzi fire, rescue and disaster management station officer Cedric Karls said it took only about five to seven minutes to put the fire out.

Karls said the fire did not disrupt traffic flow and added that he was not sure if the cargo had been contaminated by the smoke.
