Crime protest: two heed solidarity helping hand’s call for march in pmb

2010-05-20 00:00

SOLIDARITY Helping Hand (Pietermaritzburg branch) spearheaded a dismally attended march to the Pietermaritzburg Central police station as part of its nationwide protest against crime yesterday.

Only two people turned up for the march, where a petition by Solidarity Helping Hand (SHH), a subsidiary of AfriForum, was handed to the station commander.

“The uncontrollable state of crime in South Africa” featured as the overriding concern in the SHH memorandum.

“We feel that crime is currently out of control and that people in South Africa consequently fear for their safety,” SHH said in the memorandum. “Through this protest memorandum we want to voice our anger about the crime situation and indicate that we will not allow crime to be regarded as a normal part of our society.”

When The Witness asked SHH PMB branch organiser Helga van der Klooster about the dismal turnout, she said: “People don’t care about crime even though it affects them on a daily basis. I don’t care if I stand out with these banners alone, at least there’s one person standing against crime.”
